Earlier Report Observations

The Spanish market for fresh cauliflowers and broccoli opened the period with stable production, largely concentrated in Murcia and Alicante for the fresh market and in the Ebro Valley for industrial processing. Market volume showed a slight decrease in 2019 before climbing to 358.6 thousand tons in 2020.

In 2021, extreme heat waves adversely affected plant development, reducing yields and contributing to a decline in market volume to 305.4 thousand tons. The following year, despite a notable expansion of cultivated area in Murcia, constant rainfall disrupted planting and high production costs constrained supply, keeping market volume nearly flat at 306.2 thousand tons.

Market volume fell further to 269.0 thousand tons in 2023. Looking ahead, strong export demand for broccoli has emphasized the need for improved seed varieties offering higher yield and disease resistance.
