The Czech market for fresh and chilled carrots and turnips expanded from 66 571 tons in 2018 to a peak of 79 109 tons in 2021. This growth was primarily driven by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which disrupted international logistics and boosted demand for locally grown produce, leading to increased domestic production. In 2021, government subsidies for root vegetable cultivation under the Agricultural Act further stimulated output, supporting the market's elevated volume.

From 2022, the market contracted, falling to 68 202 tons in 2022 and 63 828 tons in 2023. The decline coincided with the enforcement of the Significant Market Power Act, which altered trade practices in the fresh vegetable sector, and the implementation of new EU origin-labeling rules that raised administrative costs for producers and distributors.

Underlying trends throughout the period included a sustained consumer preference for local produce, supported by farmer's markets in Prague and Brno, and the expansion of on-farm cooling and storage facilities since 2019. In 2024, the entry of 47 new brands into the Czech market widened distribution channels, while household spending on chilled foods grew by 5%, indicating continued dynamism in the sector.

Czechia's production of carrots and turnips has increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 35 930 tonnes, marking a significant 24.4% rise compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production grew by 7.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 26 650 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 20.6%.

After two years of decline, Czechia's exports of carrots and turnips have rebounded. In 2020, the country exported 6 251 tonnes, showing a 10.6% increase from the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 55.4%, translating to an average annual decrease of 23.6%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 5 653 tonnes, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 with a 52.8% decline.

Czechia's carrot and turnip exports in value terms have declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 3 113 thousand US dollars, a 7.2% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value dropped by 33%, with an average annual decline of 12.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Czechia's carrot and turnip exports in value were heavily concentrated on Slovakia, which made up 72.4% of the total. The remaining countries accounted for the rest of the share.

Following a two-year decrease, Czechia's imports of carrots and turnips have risen. In 2020, import volume reached 48 927 tonnes, reflecting a solid 19.9% increase from the previous year. Despite this recent uptick, imports over the 2017-2020 period fell by 10.8%, averaging an annual decline of 3.7%. The lowest import volume was in 2019 at 40 797 tonnes, with the largest drop occurring in 2018 at 15.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Poland, and Italy were the main suppliers of carrots and turnips to Czechia by volume. The Netherlands accounted for 51.2% of imports, Poland for 14.6%, and Italy for 10.6%, together comprising 76.4% of total import volume.

Czechia's carrot and turnip imports in value terms have declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports totaled 17 913 thousand US dollars, down 2.7% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, import value increased by 25.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.9%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 21 165 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 48.4%. The most significant decline occurred in 2019 with a 13.0% drop.

Between 2017 and 2020, the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany remained the leading sources for Czechia's carrot and turnip imports in value terms. The Netherlands accounted for 38.3% of imports, Italy for 19.6%, and Germany for 16.0%, together making up 73.9% of total import value.
