Production of camel meat in Sub-Saharan Africa rose from 193 100 tonnes in 2018 to 238 600 tonnes in 2019. This surge was fueled by Sahelian traders expanding into new West African markets like Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Senegal, driven by security risks in their home regions. Concurrently, the camel's resilience to high temperatures and efficient feeding made it an increasingly attractive protein source in the context of climate change.

Output then entered a period of decline, falling to 222 800 tonnes in 2020, 210 700 tonnes in 2021, and 199 000 tonnes in 2022. This three-year downward trend reduced total production by nearly 17% from the 2019 peak.

The market rebounded in 2023, with production reaching 232 000 tonnes. Factors observed by 2024, including growing investments in Africa's food cold-chain logistics and sustained retail demand in countries like Senegal, supported the sector's recovery. The ongoing diversification of sales beyond traditional Sahelian zones and the camel's adaptation to warming climates continued to underpin the market's expansion.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, camel meat and offal production reached 222.8 thousand tonnes in 2020, representing a 6.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production grew by 6.4%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 2.1%. The lowest production level was observed in 2018 at 193.1 thousand tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 238.6 thousand tonnes. The most significant year-on-year decline was recorded in 2018 at 7.8%, whereas the largest increase took place in 2019 with a substantial 23.6% rise.
