Earlier Report Observations

The cabbage market in Sub-Saharan Africa expanded from 3.7 million tonnes in 2018 to over 5.2 million tonnes in 2022, driven by an increase in global cultivation area for brassicas and rising demand from processing industries for fermented products like kimchi. Consumer shift toward healthy, plant-based diets further supported this growth, with heightened awareness of nutritional benefits boosting consumption across the region.

Regulatory changes emphasizing food safety certifications, such as pathogen-free cabbage standards in Ghana, enhanced consumer confidence and market value in 2022. However, persistent supply chain disruptions and price volatility led to a contraction to 4.8 million tonnes in 2023. Innovations in cabbage varieties and the adoption of digital tools in farming helped moderate the decline and supported market resilience amid climatic and logistical challenges.
