The cabbage market in Ireland experienced a sustained contraction from 2018 to 2023, with total volume falling from 37 074 t to 30 755 t. In the initial years, emerging consumer trends towards healthy snacking and a heightened focus on health and wellbeing supported underlying demand for fresh vegetables, including cabbage. Despite this, the market size declined in 2019 and remained below its 2018 level throughout the period.

Geopolitical risks, ingredient shortages, and natural resource constraints began to significantly affect horticulture supply chains by 2023. These factors contributed to a sharp reduction in domestic cabbage production, which dropped to 20 210 t. Concurrently, post-Brexit shifts in export market diversification led to a notable increase in cabbage exports, further reducing the volume available for domestic consumption.
