Earlier Report Observations

The frozen vegetables market in Sub-Saharan Africa expanded from 239.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 353.8 thousand tons in 2023, with periods of growth and stabilization. In the earlier years, urbanization and a demographic shift toward a larger 35-44 age group supported consumer demand for frozen foods as a convenient option. An average import tariff of 25.8% in 2018 also influenced market conditions by affecting the cost of imported goods.

Market volume saw a significant increase in 2023, reaching 353.8 thousand tons. This growth was driven by a rising consumer preference for convenient and health-conscious frozen products, alongside increased tourism which boosted demand from the food service sector. The planned entry of a new player, Godrej Yummiez, pointed to ongoing market diversification. Furthermore, new food additive regulations introduced in late 2023 and early 2024, set to take effect in 2025, along with the expansion of e-commerce platforms, began to shape the regulatory and distribution landscape.
