Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh or chilled edible brassicas in Ireland contracted significantly between 2018 and 2023. Market volume fell from 61 thousand tonnes to 48.6 thousand tonnes, a decline of over 20%. In value terms, the drop was sharper, from USD 125.5 million to USD 75.4 million, indicating a substantial decrease in average market prices alongside the volume reduction.

Domestic production declined from 35.6 thousand tonnes to 29.2 thousand tonnes across the period. Imports, a major supply source, also decreased from 25.9 thousand tonnes to 20.4 thousand tonnes. A temporary recovery in both volume and value occurred in 2020, but the market resumed its downward trend from 2021 through 2023.
