The Ukrainian cabbage market expanded from 1.65 million tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 1.77 million tonnes in 2020. This growth was underpinned by producers, encouraged by favorable economic results, increasing their planting areas. The period was marked by record production of white cabbage, which boosted overall supply and led to noticeable price reductions for popular varieties.

After a slight dip in 2021, the market volume contracted to 1.58 million tonnes in 2022. This decline was linked to a seasonal reduction in supply that caused a sharp spike in prices. Significant news included a $2 million investment by Agricom Group to expand production and distribution. In 2023, the market recovered to 1.62 million tonnes as oversupply of the early harvest forced farmers to cut prices. Concurrently, changing consumer preferences stimulated imports of non-traditional varieties like broccoli and cauliflower, for which domestic production was insufficient.

Ukraine's cabbage production grew for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 1 759 K t of cabbages, marking a slight increase of 1.5% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 5.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 651 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 1.4%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the highest growth with a 5.0% increase.

The export market showed significant volatility during these years. Exports varied by 2.9 times, reaching their lowest point in 2017 and peaking in 2019. In 2020, Ukraine's cabbage export volume stood at 4 718 t, representing a sharp reduction of 54.8% compared to 2019. The maximum export value was recorded in 2019 at 10 428 t, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a 136.0% surge.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Ukraine's cabbage exports in kind were Belarus (63.0% of exports), Poland (13.3%), and Romania (8.5%). Together, these three countries accounted for 84.8% of total export flows.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. Export values reached their maximum in 2019 and dropped to their minimum in 2017, representing a 3.1-fold shift. In 2020, Ukraine exported 1 396 K $ US worth of cabbages, down by 54.5% compared to the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 3 066 K $ US, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with an 88.7% rise.

Between 2017 and 2020, Belarus (62.5% of exports in value terms), Poland (11.4%), and Romania (9.1%) led the structure of cabbage exports by value. Collectively, these three countries represented 83.0% of total export flows.

Ukraine's cabbage imports increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 10 244 t, showing a moderate advance of 7.1% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 35.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 10.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine's cabbage imports in kind were heavily concentrated, with North Macedonia and Albania together accounting for 80.2% of total import flows. Other trading partners made up the remaining share.

Ukraine's cabbage imports from abroad grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country imported cabbages worth 1 396 K $ US, up by 42.5% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 166.4%, representing an annualized growth rate of 38.6%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, North Macedonia (58.7% of imports in value terms), Albania (14.7%), and Italy (9.0%) were the primary suppliers of cabbages to Ukraine. Together, these three countries accounted for 82.5% of total imports by value.
