Simultaneously, a consumer shift from traditional fast food toward healthier salad options boosted demand for fresh produce.

Market volume declined to 18 298 tonnes in 2020 and further to 17 192 tonnes in 2021, as the COVID-19 pandemic altered behavior, increasing interest in frozen foods for their longer shelf life and shifting some demand away from fresh chilled items. This preference for frozen alternatives persisted into 2021, putting pressure on the fresh segment.

A sharp drop to 11 504 tonnes occurred in 2022, coinciding with significant inflationary pressures from rising energy, transportation, and post-Brexit costs that affected retail pricing and consumer spending. The market recovered to 18 368 tonnes in 2023 amid changing export patterns, while grocery price inflation continued to influence purchasing dynamics.
