In 2018, the cabbage market in Vietnam stood at 875 thousand tonnes. It then surged by 20% to 1,054 thousand tonnes in 2019. The following year, the market stabilized at 1,034 thousand tonnes. This period coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, which reportedly increased demand for Vietnamese cabbage as production among competing countries like China, Pakistan, and India declined.

Market volume recovered and grew by 13% to 1,170 thousand tonnes in 2021. This expansion occurred alongside the launch of new processed products, such as plant-based beverages from the Vibev joint venture, signaling diversification in the use of agricultural raw materials. Growth continued at a more moderate pace in 2022, with the market reaching 1,193 thousand tonnes, a 2% increase.

By 2023, the market experienced a slight correction to 1,176 thousand tonnes, effectively stabilizing after the previous growth. During this year, Vietnam's macroeconomic stability with controlled inflation provided a favorable backdrop for the agricultural sector. Simultaneously, a strengthening trend toward green and environmentally friendly consumption boosted interest in organic produce, including cabbages.

In 2020, Vietnam produced 1 028 thousand tonnes of cabbages, marking a 1.5% year-over-year decline. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 5.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 873 thousand tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 1 043 thousand tonnes. The largest decrease occurred in 2018, falling by 10.6%, whereas the most significant increase was in 2019, rising by 19.5%.

Following two years of growth, Vietnam's cabbage production value declined. In 2020, the output was valued at 995 million US dollars, showing a slight decrease of 1.5% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 54.9%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 15.7%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 1 010 million US dollars, with the largest increase that year at 54.7%.

After a two-year upward trend, Vietnam's cabbage exports declined. In 2020, the country exported 8 113 tonnes of cabbages, representing a 19.2% contraction compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 16.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 6.0%. The highest export volume was in 2019 at 10 039 tonnes, with the largest increase that year at 2.0%.
