Broken rice production in Sub-Saharan Africa more than doubled from 719,000 t in 2018 to 1,449,000 t in 2023. The most significant annual increase occurred in 2019, when output jumped by 58% to 1,137,000 t, setting a foundation for further growth despite a minor contraction in 2023.

Market volume followed a more volatile trajectory, peaking at 5,820,000 t in 2022 after a period of stability around 5 million t. This peak was followed by a sharp drop to 4,832,000 t in 2023, a movement that coincided with a reduction in imports and emerging local production constraints.

In the latter part of the period, the market was influenced by adverse climatic conditions, including floods and hot weather, which reduced harvests in key producing nations like Nigeria. Concurrently, liberal import policies and a surge of competitively priced Indian parboiled rice intensified market competition, applying pressure on local producers and affecting overall supply dynamics.

Broken rice production in Sub-Saharan Africa has increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 1 288 K t of broken rice, marking a 13.3% rise from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 87.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 23.4%.

Exports broken rice from Sub-Saharan Africa

After two years of growth, broken rice exports from Sub-Saharan Africa fell in 2020. The export volume dropped to 77 K t, a sharp decline of 55.1% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 50.3%, with an average annual rate of 20.8%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 171 K t, while the largest increase occurred in 2018, at 7.1%.

Broken rice exports from Sub-Saharan Africa declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 61 M $ US, a sharp drop of 34.5% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 33%, with an annualized rate of 12.5%. The peak value was in 2018 at 97 M $ US, and the largest increase also happened in 2018, at 7.1%.

Imports broken rice to Sub-Saharan Africa

Broken rice imports into Sub-Saharan Africa declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region imported a total of value_last_year K t of broken rice, which is 8.7% lower than the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 31.4%, with an average annual rate of 11.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, Thailand, and Pakistan were the main sources for broken rice imports into Sub-Saharan Africa. India accounted for 34.5% of imports in kind, Thailand for 21.9%, and Pakistan for 12.4%. Together, these three countries made up 68.9% of total import flows.

Broken rice imports into Sub-Saharan Africa fell for the third consecutive year. In 2020, import volume reached 1 272 M $ US, a 15.8% decrease from the prior year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports dropped by 46.9%, with an annualized rate of 19.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, India, Thailand, and Pakistan dominated the value of broken rice imports into Sub-Saharan Africa. India represented 32.0% of imports in value terms, Thailand 25.0%, and Pakistan 11.7%. Combined, these three countries absorbed 68.7% of total import value, making them the primary markets.
