The Moroccan broken rice market volume grew significantly from 5,860 t in 2018 to 8,911 t in 2020. This expansion was initially fueled by a tripling of rice imports in 2018, supported by rising food consumption in the country. Subsequent growth was driven by the Green Morocco Plan, which organized the rice sector, expanded cultivated area by 35%, and boosted national production through focused modernization efforts, particularly in the Gharb region contributing 75% of output.

After a contraction to 6,362 t in 2021 due to climatic and geographical constraints on local rice cultivation, the market rebounded to 10,262 t by 2023. Global trade tensions, including India's export ban on broken rice, alongside rising worldwide costs for agricultural inputs and transport, influenced supply conditions in 2022. The following year, moderate economic growth and the agricultural sector's recovery from prior drought supported continued market expansion.

In 2024, broken rice imports rose to 1,886 t, while the sector faced a 4.8% decline in overall agricultural production and persistent food inflation. External factors such as reduced exports to African markets and European trade disruptions redirected some products to the domestic market, reflecting ongoing reliance on imports to meet local demand.

Morocco's broken rice production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 8 508 tonnes of broken rice, marking a significant 42.2% rise compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 141.4%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 34.1%.

The market showed considerable volatility during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2018, then peaked in 2019 with a 4.9-fold increase between these two years. In 2020, Morocco's broken rice exports totaled 0.2 tonnes, representing a 26.5% decrease from the previous year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 0.2 tonnes, which also saw the largest percentage increase of 385.7%.
