Earlier Report Observations
The market for broken rice in Middle Africa opened the period at 342 thousand tons in 2018, coinciding with regional initiatives to develop the rice sector such as the BRISPI project in Côte d'Ivoire and ECOWAS support for producer professionalization. However, a contraction to 329 thousand tons occurred in 2019, followed by a recovery to 367 thousand tons in 2020.
After a decline to 333 thousand tons in 2021 due to reduced imports, production stabilized around 256 thousand tons, supported by the OHADA Uniform Act's impact on the value chain. The market peaked at 371 thousand tons in 2022, but fell sharply to 310 thousand tons in 2023, a year that saw the launch of the African Development Bank's REWARD project for climate adaptation in West African rice value chains.
For 2024, imports increased to 132 thousand tons, with factors including funding for irrigated rice in Gambia, the introduction of fortified rice in Kenya, and a 17.6% drop in international rice prices potentially making imports more affordable, alongside ongoing demographic trends boosting demand.
