The ASEAN bakery market volume showed significant fluctuations from 2018 to 2023. It grew from 400 thousand tons in 2018 to 443 thousand tons in 2019, then surged to 724 thousand tons in 2020. After a decline to 682 thousand tons in 2021 and a sharper drop to 432 thousand tons in 2022, the market rebounded strongly to 712 thousand tons in 2023.

The sharp recovery in 2023 was propelled by changing consumer preferences across the region. Heightened health consciousness increased demand for whole grain, multigrain, and gluten-free bakery products, while a parallel rise in convenience and premium artisanal segments, especially among urban demographics, stimulated new product development and broader consumption.

Entering 2024, the market landscape was further influenced by industrial bakeries investing in automation to enhance production efficiency and by the rapid expansion of e-commerce and direct-to-consumer sales channels. A sustained consumer focus on locally sourced ingredients and functional baked goods continued to drive innovation in product offerings.

ASEAN's production of bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits, and bakers' wares rebounded after a two-year decline. In 2020, the region produced 993.8 K t of these goods, marking a significant 26.4% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 23.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.4%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2019 at 786.0 K t, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 with a 1.5% drop.

In 2020, the output value of bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits, and bakers' wares in ASEAN reached 3 827 M $ US, showing a sharp increase of 49.1% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value rose by 29.6%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 9.0%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 2 568 M $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 16.0%.

Exports bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits and bakers’ wares from ASEAN

ASEAN's exports of bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits, and bakers' wares declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 556.3 K t, representing a modest decrease of 4.2% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 4%, with an annualized decline rate of 1.4%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 595.7 K t, which also experienced the largest increase of 2.8%.

The structure of exports in kind from 2017 to 2020 was diversified, with no single country holding a clearly dominant position. China accounted for 14.5% of exports in kind, the United States for 5.3%, and Australia for 5.0%. Together, these three countries represented just 24.8% of total export flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

In 2020, the value of bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits, and bakers' wares exported from ASEAN reached 2 142 M $ US, showing an advance of 13.0% compared to 2019. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 1 896 M $ US, while the maximum value occurred in 2018 at 2 306 M $ US. The largest decline was in 2019 with a 17.8% drop.

ASEAN's imports of bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits, and bakers' wares increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region imported {value_last_year} K t of these goods, which is 20.5% higher year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 64.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 18.1%.
