Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2022, Tanzania's bread market more than tripled in size, growing from 529 t to 1 932 t. This expansion was driven by increased demand due to population growth, urbanization, and rising disposable incomes, which shifted consumer preferences towards processed and convenient foods. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 accelerated this trend, as bread's staple status maintained stable demand despite supply chain disruptions. Government fertilizer subsidies, which doubled fertilizer use by 2022, improved the availability of agricultural raw materials, supporting production.

In 2021, the Tanzania Bureau of Standards published updated bread specifications (DEAS 43:2022), formalizing quality standards. Global wheat price volatility and supply chain disruptions in 2022 spurred interest in alternative raw materials like cassava flour to reduce dependence on wheat imports. The market peaked in 2022 but declined to 1 664 t in 2023, coinciding with the promotion of cassava flour incorporation in bread making and shifts in trade flows.
