Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Peruvian bread market experienced fluctuating volumes. Industry growth in 2018 was supported by investment in machinery, development of new products, and a shift in consumer perception viewing bread as a nutritious item. The market contracted in 2019. In 2020, despite temporary flour supply disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, bread consumption rose substantially as people bought more bread during lockdowns, with reported increases of up to 30% in certain months compared to 2019.

After a dip in 2021, the market expanded sharply in 2022, reaching 766 thousand tons. This surge was propelled by new legislation mandating the use of Andean grains like quinoa in bakery products, which stimulated production and innovation. Concurrently, consumer preferences shifted decisively toward healthier bread varieties such as whole grain, artisan, and multigrain options, boosting demand. Global wheat shortages due to the Russia-Ukraine war further influenced the market environment, contributing to higher input costs.

In 2023, market volume stabilized around 746 thousand tons while value continued to climb, supported by broader economic growth and price controls within the sector. The ongoing progressive implementation of the Andean grains law and sustained consumer interest in healthier, diverse bread products continue to shape the market's trajectory.
