Earlier Report Observations

Production of beef, sheep, and goat fat in Indonesia began the period at 26 747 tons in 2018, underpinned by a substantial population of goats and sheep kept largely in small-scale traditional operations across major provinces like West Java, Central Java, and East Java. Output saw a slight dip to 26 339 tons in 2019, followed by a more pronounced decline to 22 757 tons in 2020. A recovery commenced in 2021, with production rising to 23 628 tons, coinciding with a steady increase in the national goat herd from 17.9 million head in 2016 to 19.2 million head in 2021.

The expansion gained pace in 2022 as production reached 24 550 tons. This growth was supported by active government efforts to develop the sector, notably through integrated closed-loop breeding and fattening systems promoted by the Indonesian Sheep and Goat Farmers Association (HPDKI), and was further boosted by heightened demand during the Idul Adha festival in July 2022. The positive trend continued strongly into 2023, with production jumping to 27 808 tons, exceeding pre‑2020 levels, as overall meat output from goats and sheep maintained its upward trajectory.
