Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2021, the market volume for castor oil and its fractions in Indonesia grew from 3 041 t to 3 234 t. This expansion was supported by ongoing research into industrial applications, particularly for biodiesel production and chemical conversion, which reinforced demand for castor oil as a non‑edible feedstock. Studies on catalytic hydrocracking and biodiesel blend properties highlighted the material's potential in renewable fuels and specialty chemicals.
Market volume then contracted to 2 854 t in 2022 and further to 2 294 t in 2023. The downturn followed the Indonesian Ministry of Trade's introduction of a Highest Retail Price (HET) for cooking oil in January 2022. Although aimed at edible oils, the measure created regulatory uncertainty across the broader vegetable oils sector, while global crude palm oil price fluctuations indirectly weakened the industrial demand environment for castor oil.
