Earlier Report Observations

The market for beef, sheep and goat fat in Senegal expanded from 2 075 t in 2018 to 3 703 t in 2022, an increase of over 78%. This growth was primarily driven by government-backed initiatives to enhance livestock productivity. Starting in 2018, subsidies for importing high-potential cattle breeds aimed at improving local genetics, followed by the gradual introduction of intensive cattle and goat farms. In 2022, the launch of the National Integrated Livestock Development Program (PNDIES) and the import of Guzerá breed cattle from Brazil further boosted animal output, directly raising fat production.

After peaking in 2022, production eased to 3 503 t in 2023, bringing market volume to 3 535 t. During this period, support mechanisms such as the electronic declaration of animal aid and updated Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) rules for bovine subsidies helped maintain farmer assistance. Sanitary controls and traceability requirements were also strengthened, ensuring market compliance without significantly hampering output.
