Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the market for beef, sheep, and goat fat in Eastern Africa saw significant fluctuations. It expanded to 119.2 thousand tons in 2019, a growth supported by high import volumes linked to persistent trade deficits in the region's animal products trade. This increase was reversed in 2020 when the market volume fell to 115.0 thousand tons, primarily due to outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease which adversely affected livestock health and fat production.

The market entered a phase of relative stabilization from 2021 to 2022, with volumes hovering between 113.3 and 115.5 thousand tons. The period was marked by challenges such as livestock export restrictions imposed due to international sanitary standards, which constrained production incentives for farmers.

A notable recovery occurred in 2023, with market volume climbing to 122.9 thousand tons. This growth was driven by government interventions in the animal feed sector, including the launch of county-level strategies aimed at improving feed supply and livestock productivity, which directly supported higher fat production.
