Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2023, the Lebanese market for beef, sheep, and goat fat experienced significant volatility. The market volume started at 3 393 tonnes in 2018, then dropped sharply to 2 071 tonnes in 2019. It gradually recovered to 2 271 tonnes by 2021, dipped again to 1 969 tonnes in 2022, and surged to 2 829 tonnes in 2023.
The decline in 2022 was partly driven by a collapse in the veterinary sector and pet supplies, which affected sheep farms and reduced the availability of livestock products. In 2023, market volume rebounded strongly despite lower domestic production, as imports more than doubled to compensate. By 2024, factors such as the near-stoppage of slaughterhouses, monopolization of cattle supplies, and fluctuating livestock prices due to black-market dollar rates continued to shape the supply side.
