From 2018 to 2023, the market volume for fresh or chilled beans in Middle Africa fluctuated between 12 802 t and 14 005 t. After a slight dip to 12 802 t in 2019, consumption rose to 13 920 t in 2020 and peaked at 14 005 t in 2021, before easing to 13 587 t in 2022 and recovering slightly to 13 701 t in 2023.

In 2024, bean imports jumped to 2 644 t against exports of 433 t. This surge in imports coincided with a dry season affecting local bean harvests and prices, coupled with sharply higher fertilizer costs due to spikes in European natural gas and Chinese coal prices, which constrained domestic production capacity.

Middle Africa's bean production volume declined after a two-year uptick. In 2019, production reached its peak at 13,699 tonnes. The following year, in 2020, output was broadly stable at 13,683 tonnes. The largest annual increase occurred in 2018, at 0.4%.

Middle Africa's bean imports declined for the third consecutive year. In 2019, imports totaled 259 tonnes, followed by a dramatic decline of 25.3% in 2020. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 73.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -35.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, no single market dominated bean imports in value terms. Portugal (5.2% of imports in value), Togo (4.3%), and Belgium (3.7%) together represented only 13.2% of total imports, while many smaller partners each held modest individual shares.
