Earlier Report Observations

The European dried shelled beans market displayed overall growth from 879.6 thousand tons in 2018 to 960.5 thousand tons in 2021, following a minor contraction in 2019. A key driver emerged in 2020 when the European company Lupii launched protein bars made from lupini beans, a traditional Mediterranean crop. This innovation created a new, convenient product segment, stimulating additional demand for beans in food processing and contributing to the market's expansion.

Market volume then receded to 923.4 thousand tons in 2022. This decline was influenced by a reported reduction in bush bean cultivation areas in Germany, which constrained domestic supply, and a concurrent shift in consumer preference toward fresh beans that diverted demand from the dried segment. By 2023, the market stabilized at 915.5 thousand tons.
