The Turkish barytes market began the period at a high volume of 474 thousand tons in 2018, sustained by state-backed mining activities and rising drilling operations in the oil and gas sector, which increased demand for barytes as a weighting agent.

Market volume dropped sharply to 170 thousand tons in 2019. The contraction worsened in 2020, falling to 111 thousand tons, as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains and reduced activity in the oil and gas industry, curbing demand. A post-pandemic recovery started in 2021, reviving oil and gas sector activity and encouraging domestic capacity investments, yet market volume dipped slightly to 104 thousand tons.

A reversal took place in 2022, with market volume climbing to 129 thousand tons. This growth was propelled by significant state-supported mining projects, the launch of new production facilities, and the entry of new domestic and foreign players, which expanded output to meet recovering demand.

Barytes production in Turkey declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Turkey produced 283.2 thousand tonnes of barytes, which is 31.6% less than in 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 43.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -17.3%. The highest production was recorded in 2018 at 785.0 thousand tonnes, marking a 56.9% increase from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a 47.3% drop.

Between 2017 and 2020, production decreased by 33.1%, equating to an annualized rate of -12.5%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 103.8 million US dollars, representing a 51.1% increase from 2017. The largest decline was in 2019, with a 43.3% decrease.

Exports barytes to Turkey

Turkey's volume of barytes exports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Turkey exported 181.0 thousand tonnes of barytes, representing a 27.6% year-over-year decline. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 13.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -4.6%. The maximum volume was recorded in 2018 at 315.4 thousand tonnes, which was a 51.5% increase from 2017.

Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 2.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 0.9%. The highest value was in 2018 at 41 687 thousand US dollars, marking a 45.9% increase from the previous year.
