Earlier Report Observations

The Turkish natural magnesium carbonate market experienced notable fluctuations between 2018 and 2022. Starting at a high of 1.9 million tonnes in 2018, supported by active industrial use in sectors like heat insulation, rubber, and glass, the market contracted sharply the following year. A recovery began in 2020, fueled by increased application as a moisture-absorbing filler in sports equipment and as an anti-caking agent in cosmetics, pushing consumption to 1.5 million tonnes. The most significant growth arrived in 2021, when the market expanded to 1.8 million tonnes, primarily driven by major investments in production capacity, most notably the ongoing development of the Esan Magnesium plant, which aimed to add substantial primary magnesium output using the Pidgeon process.

By 2022, the market volume saw a modest correction to 1.8 million tonnes, stabilizing at a high level. This period was marked by regulatory developments, including stricter rules governing the use of the 'natural' claim on food labels for products containing magnesium carbonate, which altered marketing strategies. Concurrently, consumer demand for organic and non-GMO supplements and the sustained popularity of magnesium carbonate in climbing and gymnastics as a drying agent provided underlying support to the market, helping to maintain volume despite the new labeling requirements.
