The market volume for apricots in Portugal declined from 6,469 tons in 2018 to 5,414 tons in 2023, a reduction of over 1,000 tons. This contraction was primarily driven by a substantial fall in imports, which dropped from 4,129 tons to 2,039 tons in 2022 before a partial recovery in 2023. Domestic production showed significant volatility, peaking at 4,010 tons in 2022 but then falling sharply to 2,590 tons the following year.

Exports also decreased markedly from 1,171 tons in 2018 to 311 tons in 2020, thereafter stabilizing around 500–600 tons. The combined effect of lower imports and fluctuating production led to a steadily shrinking market size throughout the period from 2018 to 2023.

By 2025, the Portuguese agri-food sector was undergoing changes with a focus on innovation, technology and sustainability, geared towards evolving consumer preferences. The entry of the Spanish retail chain Mercadona into Portugal, with plans to open between 150 and 200 stores, marked a significant shift in the food retail landscape that could influence product distribution and availability.

Portugal's apricot production reached 3 450 tonnes in 2021, marking a 6.5% increase from the previous year. Production peaked in 2019 at 3 610 tonnes before declining to its lowest point of 3 240 tonnes in 2020, which represented a significant 10.2% drop.

Exports apricots from Portugal

After two consecutive years of decline, Portugal's apricot exports rebounded in 2021, reaching 496 tonnes—a substantial 59.3% increase from 2020. However, exports hit their lowest point in 2020 at 311 tonnes, with that year seeing the sharpest decline of 65.1%. Over the 2018-2021 period, overall exports fell by 57.7%, translating to an average annual decline of 24.9%.

From 2018 to 2021, Poland, Hungary, and Spain were consistently the top destinations for Portugal's apricot exports by volume. Poland accounted for 38.5% of exports, Hungary for 24.0%, and Spain for 15.0%, together making up 77.5% of total export flows.

Portugal's apricot exports in value terms recovered in 2021 after two years of contraction, reaching 731 thousand US dollars—a notable 44.7% rise from 2020. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 505 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 50.3%. Over the 2018-2021 period, export value decreased by 57.7%, with an average annual decline of 24.9%.
