The apricot market volume in the MENA region showed considerable fluctuation between 2018 and 2023. It reached a high of 972.3 thousand tons in 2019 before entering a pronounced downturn, contracting by nearly 10% in 2020 and falling further to 795.8 thousand tons in 2021. This represented an overall decline of 18% from the 2019 peak.

A partial recovery occurred in 2022, with the market expanding to 871.5 thousand tons. However, this rebound was not sustained, as volume dipped again to 840.5 thousand tons in 2023, leaving the market 13% smaller than at its pre-decline height. Domestic production followed a broadly similar pattern of decline and recovery over the same period.

In 2020, MENA produced 849.5 thousand tons of apricots, marking a 9.1% decline from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 13.4%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -4.7%. The only year of growth was 2019, which saw a modest 0.3% increase.

Exports apricots from MENA

Exports in kind, t

The data shows irregular changes, pointing to a volatile market. Import levels varied significantly, with a 1.9-fold difference between the low of 2018 and the high of 2017. In 2020, apricot exports from MENA totaled 13 313 tons, a 30.8% decrease from 2019. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 11 048 tons. The sharpest decline occurred in 2018, dropping by 46.5%, while the largest increase was in 2019, rising by 74.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Spain, and France remained the top destinations for apricot exports from MENA in terms of volume. Russia accounted for 3.7% of exports, while Spain and France each contributed 0.9%. Together, these three countries made up 5.5% of total export flows.

Exports in value, K $ US

Apricot export values from MENA rose for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 33 059 thousand US dollars, up 9.1% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export values increased by 16.2%, with a CAGR of 5.1%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 23 547 thousand US dollars, which saw a 17.3% decline. The largest increase was in 2019, with a 28.6% rise.

Between 2017 and 2020, Russia, France, and Spain were the largest buyers of apricots from MENA in value terms. Russia accounted for 3.5% of export value, France for 1.0%, and Spain for 0.5%. Combined, these three countries represented 5.0% of total export value.

Imports apricots to MENA

After two years of growth, apricot imports into MENA declined. In 2020, imports totaled 40 280 tons, a 29.7% drop from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 2.4%, with a CAGR of -0.8%. The peak import volume was in 2019 at 57 289 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 25.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey, South Africa, and Greece were the leading sources of apricot imports into MENA by volume. Turkey dominated with 54.5% of imports, followed by South Africa at 3.5% and Greece at 1.7%. Together, these three countries accounted for 59.7% of total import flows.

Imports in value, K $ US

Apricot import values into MENA increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 51 652 thousand US dollars, a 14.7% improvement over 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, import values grew by 51.8%, with a CAGR of 14.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the partner landscape for apricot imports into MENA in value terms was diverse. Turkey, South Africa, and Australia were key players, with Turkey accounting for 26.5% of import value, South Africa for 8.7%, and Australia for 4.6%. Together, they made up 39.8% of total flows, while the remaining 60.2% came from many other countries.
