The apricot market in Italy showed initial expansion, with volume rising to 239.9 thousand tons in 2019 from 222.6 thousand tons the previous year. This upward trend was sharply interrupted in 2020 when the market contracted by over 28%, falling to 172.7 thousand tons.

Following the downturn, market volume stabilized near 171.5 thousand tons in 2021 before entering a clear recovery phase. Consumption grew by 12.5% to 193.0 thousand tons in 2022 and increased further to 199.9 thousand tons in 2023, indicating a gradual return towards pre-2020 levels.

In 2020, Italy produced 173.4 thousand tons of apricots, representing a 36.5% decrease from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production declined by 34.9%, which translates to an annualized rate of 13.3%. The peak production was recorded in 2019 at 273.0 thousand tons, with the largest year-on-year increase of 19.2% also occurring that year.

Exports apricots from Italy

The export market for apricots from Italy showed significant volatility during these years. In 2019, exports reached their highest volume at 48,292 tons, while in 2020, they fell to their lowest at 17,451 tons, resulting in a 2.8-fold difference between these two years. After a two-year decline, Italy's apricot imports rebounded in 2020, reaching 16,776 tons, a 10.1% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 23.4%, with an annualized rate of -8.5%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 15,232 tons, which also experienced the largest decline of 24.4%.
