Apples, pears and quinces market in Slovakia

The market volume for fresh apples, pears and quinces in Slovakia experienced significant fluctuations from 2018 to 2023. After starting at 62 177 t in 2018, it dipped to 58 817 t the following year before surging to a peak of 67 096 t in 2020. This was followed by a sharp contraction to 54 697 t in 2021, after which the market recovered to 61 440 t in 2022 and reached 64 101 t in 2023.

Domestic production of these fruits declined substantially over the period, falling from 45 320 t in 2018 to 27 420 t in 2023. This drop was offset by rising imports, which increased from 34 235 t to 51 800 t over the same span, ensuring market supply. Exports showed a more volatile pattern, ending the period slightly higher than in 2018.

The overall market size in 2023 ended slightly above the 2018 level, despite the sustained decline in local output. The growing reliance on imports became a defining feature of the Slovak market for apples, pears and quinces during these years.

Slovakia's production of apples, pears, and quinces declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 29 540 tonnes, marking a 17.9% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 11.3%, with an average annual decline of 3.9%. The highest output was recorded in 2018 at 45 320 tonnes, which saw a 36.0% increase. The largest drop occurred in 2019, with a 20.6% decrease.

In 2020, Slovakia exported 17 566 tonnes of apples, pears, and quinces, a 6.3% rise from the year before. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 28.5%, averaging an 8.7% annual increase. The largest decline was in 2019 at 4.9%, while the biggest jump was in 2018 with a 27.2% increase.

From 2017 to 2020, the main markets for Slovakia's exports of apples, pears, and quinces were Czechia, Italy, and Hungary. Czechia accounted for 68.1% of exports, Italy for 11.8%, and Hungary for 5.8%, together making up 85.7% of total export volumes.

In 2020, the value of Slovakia's exports of apples, pears, and quinces reached 15 136 thousand US dollars, a sharp 42.5% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export values rose by 62.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 17.5%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 9.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Czechia and Italy dominated Slovakia's export value for apples, pears, and quinces, together accounting for 80.4% of the total. The remaining share was spread across other destinations, each with smaller contributions.

From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 14.9%, with an average annual increase of 4.7%. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 34 235 tonnes, which saw a 28.7% decline, the largest drop in the period.

The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 25 005 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 15.6%.
