Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for fresh apples, pears and quinces in Kazakhstan grew from 353.9 thousand tonnes to 384.3 thousand tonnes. This rise was primarily fueled by increasing imports to satisfy domestic demand, supported by state policies promoting orchard expansion and the adoption of modern cultivation technologies like drip irrigation, which enhanced yields. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced supply chain disruptions in 2020, moderating the pace of growth.

Post-pandemic recovery in 2021 pushed the market volume to a peak of 396.4 thousand tonnes, aided by returning consumer demand and the entry of new producers and processors. The following year saw stabilization around 394.5 thousand tonnes. Although a record apple harvest was achieved, an estimated 100 thousand tonnes were lost due to insufficient storage and logistics infrastructure, offsetting the potential supply increase.

In 2023, the market volume contracted to 361.5 thousand tonnes. During this period, retail food turnover showed significant growth, reflecting changing consumption patterns, while the market remained heavily dependent on imports from Poland and China. Concurrently, new product segments such as apple juice concentrates and processing developed, diversifying the industry landscape.
