Earlier Report Observations
The almond market in Iran contracted sharply from 199 thousand tons in 2018 to 87 thousand tons in 2022. This prolonged decline coincided with increased export volumes, which were encouraged by currency exchange rate fluctuations that made foreign sales more attractive for producers. During these years, market development focused on the adoption of modern industrial cultivation techniques, improved packaging, and higher-quality almond varieties to enhance competitiveness, though these structural improvements did not offset the overall market contraction.
A significant rebound occurred in 2023, with market volume jumping to 135 thousand tons. This recovery was driven by a surge in imports to 30.5 thousand tons and a rise in domestic production to 116 thousand tons. The expansion was facilitated by the ongoing enhancement of electronic payment infrastructure and logistics, which improved market access. Concurrently, a sustained shift in consumer behavior toward online shopping widened distribution channels and supported demand for fresh, high-quality almonds.
Throughout the period, currency volatility remained a persistent factor influencing almond prices and trade flows. Investments in production technology, quality grading, and standard packaging continued, aiming to strengthen the sector for both domestic and export markets.
