Earlier Report Observations

The Russian alliaceous vegetables market volume grew from 2.0 million tons in 2018 to 2.2 million tons in 2020. This expansion was primarily driven by state-supported companies and large agricultural players investing in modern cultivation technologies and expanding greenhouse infrastructure, which increased domestic production capacities. Even as the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 temporarily reduced demand from the hospitality sector, market volume continued to rise as consumers shifted towards more affordable vegetable categories.

After a contraction to 1.9 million tons in 2021, the market recovered to 2.0 million tons by 2023. This rebound was fueled by import restrictions and sanctions that intensified the focus on import substitution, prompting major agri-holdings to launch new production facilities. Furthermore, a significant 8% increase in Russia's total vegetable harvest in 2023, supported by ongoing development in the greenhouse segment, contributed to the rising supply of alliaceous vegetables.
