From 2018 to 2020, the Russian cucumber and gherkin market volume remained stable at around 1 710 thousand tons. Production gradually increased, reaching 1 687 thousand tons in 2020, while the COVID-19 pandemic introduced logistical disruptions and supply chain challenges that affected availability and prices.

Market volume contracted to 1 618 thousand tons in 2021, coinciding with the introduction of changes to the Eurasian Economic Union's product nomenclature in September 2021, which altered classification and customs duties, alongside persistent global logistical difficulties. Recovery began in 2022, with volume rising to 1 667 thousand tons, driven by sanctions and import restrictions that stimulated domestic production and the emergence of new product segments.

Growth continued in 2023 as the market reached 1 707 thousand tons, supported by a significant expansion of greenhouse cultivation where closed-ground volumes for cucumbers increased and the development of new, more productive hybrid varieties.

Russia's production of cucumbers and gherkins grew for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 1 687 thousand tonnes, showing a modest increase of 3.7% compared to 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, production rose by 12.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.9%.

The export market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Volumes hit their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2020, representing a 3.9-fold increase. In 2020, the value of cucumbers and gherkins exports from Russia totaled 15.0 million US dollars, marking a sharp rise of 225.3% from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 11.1%.

During 2017–2020, Iran (30.0% of import volume), China (22.9%), and Belarus (19.8%) were the largest suppliers of cucumbers and gherkins to Russia, collectively making up 72.7% of total imports in volume terms.
