The ASEAN market for alliaceous vegetables saw its physical volume grow from around 6 million tonnes in 2018 to 6.5 million tonnes in 2023. This expansion was underpinned by a consistent rise in domestic production, which increased by over 600 thousand tonnes across the period.

In value terms, the market displayed more volatility, peaking at nearly $7 billion in 2021 before contracting to $5.6 billion in 2023. This contrast between stable volume growth and fluctuating market value points to significant changes in prices or the composition of goods traded within the region.

While imports experienced a temporary dip in 2019, they remained a key supply source. Exports grew steadily, albeit from a low base, nearly tripling in volume by 2023, reflecting the region's strengthening production base and its evolving role in international trade.

ASEAN's production of alliaceous vegetables has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 4 700 K t, marking a 7.5% increase from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 16.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.3%.

ASEAN's exports of alliaceous vegetables have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 122 K t, up 48.5% from the previous year. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 70 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 42.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, key buyers of ASEAN's alliaceous vegetables included Bangladesh (6.2% of exports in kind), China (3.6%), and Asia, not elsewhere specified (2.5%). However, their combined share was just 12.2% of total exports, with the remaining 87.8% distributed among numerous other partners.

ASEAN's export value of alliaceous vegetables has risen for the second year running. In 2020, exports totaled 139 M $ US, a sharp increase of 56.9% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 59.1%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 16.7%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 66 M $ US, which also experienced the largest decline of 24.4%.

During 2017–2020, ASEAN's export value of alliaceous vegetables was relatively evenly distributed. China (17.8% of exports in value terms), Bangladesh (5.5%), and the United States (3.3%) together accounted for only 26.6% of total flows.

Imports alliaceous vegetables to ASEAN

ASEAN's imports of alliaceous vegetables have shown a strong upward trend. In 2020, imports amounted to 1 769 K t, a robust 17.5% increase from 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 2.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of -1.0%. The lowest volume was in 2019 at 1 505 K t, while the peak was in 2018 at 1 879 K t. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 19.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, China and India were the primary sources for ASEAN's imports in kind, together making up 82.0% of total flows, with other partners accounting for the remainder.

ASEAN's import value of alliaceous vegetables has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 1 278 M $ US, a solid gain of 14.3% over the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports rose by 5.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 066 M $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 11.9%.

In 2017–2020, China dominated ASEAN's imports of alliaceous vegetables in value terms, accounting for 73.8% of the total, while the rest was spread across various smaller partners.
