Earlier Report Observations

The official market volume for alcoholic beer in Algeria began at 179 million liters in 2018. Regulatory uncertainty, including frozen circulars on liberalizing wholesale alcohol sales and local authorities' refusal to issue retail permits, constrained market expansion. These administrative bottlenecks contributed to a decline to 172 million liters in 2019 and a further drop to 140 million liters in 2020, as legal distribution channels were severely restricted.

A sharp rebound occurred in 2021, with the market expanding to 186 million liters. This growth was supported by continued investment in local production capacity, including expansions at some breweries that increased their output potential, boosting domestic supply and market volume.

The market then contracted to 153 million liters in 2022 and stabilized at 155 million liters in 2023. During this period, consumption patterns were shaped by conservative social norms and the market dominance of two major private brewers, which maintained a structured but volume-constrained environment.
