The volume of the Turkish yoghurt market fluctuated significantly from 2018 to 2023. After growing to 8 040 t in 2019, consumption contracted for two consecutive years, reaching a low of 6 636 t in 2021. The following period brought a sharp reversal, with the market expanding to 9 955 t in 2022 and further to 10 949 t in 2023.

Domestic production mirrored this trajectory, peaking at 10 981 t in 2019 before declining through 2022. Output recovered in 2023 to match the market volume at 10 949 t. In the latter years, recorded import and export activity ceased, making local output the sole source of supply for the domestic market.

Yoghurt production in Turkey saw growth for two consecutive years before declining in 2020. That year, Turkey produced 10 477 tonnes of yoghurt, representing a moderate decrease of 4.6% compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production increased by 2.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.9%. Production reached its peak in 2019 at 10 981 tonnes, which also marked the largest annual increase of 4.0% during this timeframe.

In 2020, the value of yoghurt production in Turkey was 7 969 thousand US dollars, reflecting a significant year-over-year decline of 13.7%. From 2017 to 2020, the production value decreased by 18.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 6.6%. The largest increase in value occurred in 2019, with a modest rise of 0.3%.

Exports yoghurt to Turkey

Turkey's yoghurt exports in 2020 totaled 2 756 tonnes, showing a moderate decrease of 7.9% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell sharply by 60.5%, with an average annual decline of 26.6%. The most significant drop was recorded in 2018 at 59.3%, while 2019 saw the largest increase of 5.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Georgia, Qatar, and Iraq were the top destinations for Turkey's yoghurt exports in volume terms. Georgia accounted for 33.4% of exports, Qatar for 30.3%, and Iraq for 12.1%. Together, these three countries represented 75.7% of Turkey's total yoghurt export flows.

The market exhibited considerable volatility during these years. Turkey's yoghurt exports in value terms reached 2 096 thousand US dollars in 2020, down 16.7% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, export levels fluctuated significantly, with a 3.2-fold difference between the high in 2017 and the low in 2020. The largest decline occurred in 2018 at 63.0%, while 2019 saw the biggest increase of 1.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Qatar, Georgia, and Cyprus were the primary buyers of Turkish yoghurt in value terms. Qatar led with 34.8% of exports, followed by Georgia at 21.4%, and Cyprus at 9.4%. Collectively, these three markets accounted for 65.5% of Turkey's total yoghurt export value.

Yoghurt imports into Turkey increased for the second consecutive year in 2020. The country imported 52 tonnes of yoghurt that year, marking a slight improvement of 2.4% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 49.3%, with an average annual decline of 20.2%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 52 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 51.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany and Greece were the dominant suppliers of yoghurt to Turkey in volume terms. Together, they accounted for 82.5% of total imports, with other partners playing a less significant role.

The value of yoghurt imports into Turkey declined for the third consecutive year in 2020. Imports amounted to 91 thousand US dollars, down 17.5% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, import value decreased by 55.8%, equating to an average annual decline of 23.8%.

Throughout the 2017-2020 period, Germany clearly dominated Turkey's yoghurt imports in value terms, holding 75.8% of total flows. Other countries each accounted for significantly smaller shares.
