The Hungarian yogurt market volume reached its highest point in 2019 at 104 524 tons, following a modest increase from 103 211 tons in 2018. After this peak, the market began to contract, falling to 100 159 tons in 2020 and further to 95 406 tons in 2021.

A pronounced downturn took place in 2022, when the market size plummeted by over a third to 62 220 tons. This steep decline coincided with imports dropping to zero, while domestic production also decreased, accounting for the entire market volume that year.

In 2023, the market continued to shrink, though at a reduced rate, declining by 3% to 60 320 tons. Production levels matched the market volume, indicating a market fully supplied by domestic output.

Hungary's yoghurt production declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 67 810 tonnes, showing little change from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 6.3%, with an annualized decline of 2.2%.

Hungary's yoghurt production value increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 91 198 thousand US dollars, remaining broadly stable compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value decreased by 5.9%, with an annualized decline of 2.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 89 586 thousand US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2018 at 7.5%, while the largest increase was in 2019 at 1.5%.

Exports yoghurt from Hungary

After a two-year decline, Hungary's yoghurt export volume increased. In 2020, exports totaled 1 565 tonnes, representing a 12.6% rise compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 9.7%, with an annualized decline of 3.3%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 389 tonnes, and the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 16.9%.
