Earlier Report Observations

The Hungarian cheese and curd market volume fluctuated significantly between 2018 and 2023. After relatively stable volumes around 135-142 thousand tonnes from 2018 to 2020, consumption surged dramatically in 2021 to reach 234 thousand tonnes, a 65% increase from the previous year.

This sharp expansion was primarily driven by a near doubling of domestic production, which jumped from 116 thousand tonnes in 2020 to 211 thousand tonnes in 2021. While imports remained steady at approximately 60-65 thousand tonnes annually, growing exports gradually absorbed a larger share of the output.

Following the peak, market volume gradually contracted to 223 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 217 thousand tonnes in 2023, remaining well above pre-2021 levels and reflecting a sustained increase in domestic production capacity.
