Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the European yoghurt market volume expanded from 4.1 million tonnes to 4.7 million tonnes. This growth was primarily fueled by rising consumer preference for flavored yoghurt in key markets like Germany, the UK, and France, prompting major companies to introduce new varieties. Concurrently, increased health consciousness boosted demand for probiotic-rich and low-fat options, while the launch of new segments, such as Greek yoghurt and yoghurt drinks, further diversified the offering.

Market volume contracted to 4.2 million tonnes in 2021, marking a correction after the prior expansion. During this period, manufacturers continued to innovate, focusing on sugar-free and heart-healthy yoghurts in response to clean label and fermented food trends. Volume recovered to 4.4 million tonnes in 2022, supported by the launch of new flavored products by companies like Libstar Holdings, LANCEWOOD, and Dannon Egypt, as well as sustained demand for healthy and convenient foods during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Growth continued in 2023, with volume reaching 4.5 million tonnes. This was driven by the persistent trend toward healthy, low-calorie, and protein-rich yoghurts, including plant-based alternatives, and a strengthened consumer preference for fruit yoghurt with higher fruit content and lower sugar.
