Earlier Report Observations
The market volume of sweetened and flavoured yoghurt in CIS expanded sharply from 804 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 1.14 million tonnes in 2019. This surge was driven by the entry of new players and a continuous broadening of the product range with various fruit, berry, and natural flavour additions. Large producers, including state-owned companies, actively increased output, while currency fluctuations and trade sanctions affected import and export flows.
During the 2020-2021 period, the market stabilized around 1.14-1.12 million tonnes. The COVID-19 pandemic shifted consumer focus toward health, boosting demand for plain yoghurt and products with natural tastes. Concurrently, protein-rich, low-sugar varieties and yoghurts with functional additives for digestion and immunity emerged as new segments, though these trends did not significantly alter the total market size.
Sanctions and restrictions on imported ingredients and packaging materials led to a contraction in 2022, with the market falling to 1.01 million tonnes. By 2023, producers adapted by emphasizing functional additives for immunity and gut health, and responded to the global cocoa shortage by promoting yoghurt without cocoa or chocolate additions. These shifts helped the market recover to 1.07 million tonnes.
