A strong rebound followed in 2021, with market volume reaching 10.5 million m³, driven by increasing demand for OSB as a sustainable building material. After a sharp drop to 7.1 million m³ in 2022, the market recovered to 8.3 million m³ in 2023.

In 2020, Europe produced 9 033 K m³ of OSB, marking a 3.5% year-over-year increase. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 3.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.3%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, when production fell by 3.0%.

After two years of growth, Europe's OSB production volume declined. In 2020, the output was valued at 2 046 M $ US, down 26.2% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 2.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.0%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 2 771 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 20.4%.

Exports OSB from Europe

Exports in kind, K m³

In 2020, Europe's OSB exports totaled 6 060 K m³, reflecting a 52.3% improvement over the prior year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 21.7%, equating to an annualized rate of 6.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 3 979 K m³, which also experienced the largest decline of 30.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Europe's OSB exports in kind were characterized by a broad spread across markets. Turkey accounted for 2.5% of exports in kind, China for 2.3%, and Switzerland for 2.3%, with these three countries together making up only 7.1% of total flows.

In 2020, Europe's cross-border shipments of OSB totaled 1 372 M $ US, an 8.6% increase over the past year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 13.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 4.4%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 472 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 22.1%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 14.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the country structure of Europe's OSB exports in value terms remained highly diversified. Turkey represented 2.4% of exports in value terms, China 2.3%, and Switzerland 2.1%, with these three countries together accounting for only 6.9% of total flows. A long tail of smaller markets made up the remaining 93.1%.

OSB shipments to Europe from abroad increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 5 125 K m³, a 14.4% advance compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports surged by 86.4%, equating to an annualized rate of 23.1%.
