Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, production of wood in the rough in Togo remained stable at around 2 995–2 998 thousand tonnes per year. This period saw the implementation of the National Forest Investment Plan (PNIF) and the National Development Plan (PND), which focused on protecting forest ecosystems and maintaining the sector's contribution to the national GDP, estimated at 11%.

A major policy change in May 2021 prohibited the export of unprocessed or semi-processed sawn wood to combat deforestation and encourage domestic value addition. This ban redirected timber supply to local processors, supporting a rise in production to 3 117 thousand tonnes in 2022. Enhanced regulatory frameworks under the government's 2020–2025 roadmap and digitalization of timber trade procedures further facilitated this growth.

In 2023, production declined moderately to 3 050 thousand tonnes as authorities prioritized sustainable forest management. Large-scale reforestation campaigns, which planted over 5 million trees across 8 000 hectares, and stricter controls on exploitation aimed to balance resource use with conservation, despite persistently high demand for wood energy estimated at 8.3 million cubic meters annually.
