Earlier Report Observations

After reaching 343.5 million tons in 2018, supported by rising disposable income and government initiatives for furniture manufacturing and residential construction, wood in the rough production in Latin America and the Caribbean declined to 330.8 million tons in 2019 due to bureaucratic barriers and high tax burdens that limited international competitiveness. The market recovered to 337.5 million tons in 2020, driven by increased demand for certified and sustainable timber alongside industry professionalization through training and certification.

Production accelerated to 351.6 million tons in 2021, partly because supply chain disruptions for wood panels in Brazil raised demand for raw timber, while a greater focus on sustainable practices and forest certification stimulated output. Growth continued to 363.8 million tons in 2022, fueled by regional demand for eco-friendly furniture and certified wood products. By 2023, production stabilized at 365.6 million tons as Peru emerged as a key tropical timber supplier and commercial missions helped diversify export markets.
