Earlier Report Observations

The Swedish wood fuel market expanded in 2019, reaching 10 397 thousand cubic meters, but contracted sharply in 2020 to 8 225 thousand cubic meters. A slight recovery followed in 2021, with the market volume increasing to 8 314 thousand cubic meters.

Market volume edged down again in 2022 to 8 105 thousand cubic meters. During this period, the Russian invasion of Ukraine drove up global prices for wood fuels, increasing demand and costs, while high energy prices and transport shortages created uncertainty for export flows.

The market rebounded strongly in 2023, growing to 9 200 thousand cubic meters. This increase was supported by rising consumer and industrial preference for sustainable and eco-friendly wood products, including certified bioenergy. Looking ahead, prices for wood fuel continued to rise rapidly in 2024 due to reduced sawmill output and weaker construction activity, intensifying competition for biofuels.
