The wood fuel market in Saudi Arabia opened the period with a volume of 779 thousand m³ in 2018. This year saw the introduction of legal measures to protect forests, promoting tree planting over cutting, which affected wood supply. Additionally, a trend toward green building, which uses wood as an alternative to steel and concrete, emerged in the construction sector. By 2019, the market stabilized at 764 thousand m³, before contracting significantly to 562 thousand m³ in 2020.

From 2021 onward, the market recovered steadily, reaching 840 thousand m³ by 2023. This growth coincided with a rise in diesel prices, which increased the cost of conventional fuel and made wood fuel a more competitive heating alternative, boosting demand.

The market displayed volatility during the observed period. Exports reached their peak in 2018 at 12.0 K m³ and fell to a trough in 2020 at 0.2 K m³, representing a dramatic 68-fold difference. From 2017 to 2020, Oman, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates formed the main cluster of markets for Saudi Arabia's wood fuel exports in value terms. Oman represented 52.2% of exports, Bahrain 16.9%, and the United Arab Emirates 13.3%. Combined, these three markets accounted for 82.5% of total export flows.
