Earlier Report Observations

The wood fuel market in Morocco experienced a gradual contraction from 2018 to 2023, with volume decreasing from 6 615 thousand m³ to 6 525 thousand m³. This trend was initiated by the national bois-énergie strategy launched in 2018, which aimed to sustainably manage forest resources by reducing wood fuel consumption through the distribution of improved stoves with 50% higher efficiency and by promoting alternative energy sources. The strategy was reinforced in 2020 under the Forêts du Maroc 2020-2030 roadmap, further committing to lower consumption and better forest governance.

Sharp increases in wood prices, particularly in 2021 and 2023 due to global market pressures and post-pandemic recovery, made wood fuel less affordable and contributed to dampening demand. Although the development of green construction in Morocco, supported by national emission reduction targets, raised demand for wood as a building material, this did not offset the decline in the fuel segment. The limited impact of the Ukraine war on the sector, thanks to diversified international suppliers, helped avoid supply shocks that could have altered the consumption trend.

Continuous pressure on forest resources from high annual consumption and limited reforestation progress underscored the structural challenges. The sustained implementation of the bois-énergie strategy, including the ongoing distribution of improved stoves, consistently worked to reduce wood fuel use, aligning with the observed steady market contraction over the period.
