Iraq's wood fuel market has been shaped by the country's overarching economic dependence on oil, a trend highlighted in post-2003 industrial policies that saw limited diversification. Domestic production remained steady at 118 thousand cubic meters annually from 2018 through 2023. However, the total market volume grew from 165.3 thousand cubic meters to 236.5 thousand cubic meters over this period, driven entirely by a surge in imports, which more than doubled from 47.3 thousand to 118.8 thousand cubic meters.

The significant rise in wood fuel imports aligned with mounting challenges within Iraq's oil sector. Economic difficulties, including a sharp depreciation of the dinar against the dollar in 2022 and 2023, increased the appeal of more affordable alternative fuels. This trend was further reinforced in 2024 by a government-mandated increase in gasoline prices as part of a subsidy restructuring policy, alongside the withdrawal of major international oil companies and growing Chinese influence in key oil fields, which collectively spurred demand for accessible energy sources like wood fuel.

Throughout 2017–2020, Indonesia was the main supplier of wood fuel to Iraq, accounting for 73.2% of total imports in kind, while other partners had relatively modest shares.
