Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2020, the Iraqi wood in the rough market volume gradually increased from 128.3 thousand tons to 131.9 thousand tons, primarily driven by rising imports while domestic production remained stable at 115.1 thousand tons.
The import decline in 2021 was partly linked to increased global demand for wood in furniture and construction, which raised world prices and reduced availability, affecting Iraq's import volumes. In 2022, a contraction in timber trade in certain regions, such as the villages of the Al-Waqf basin in Diyala province, further contributed to the market's shrinkage.
By 2023, the market volume continued to decrease, reaching 119.7 thousand tons, down 5.4% from the previous year, with domestic production holding steady.
