Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, India's wood fuel production and market volume experienced a gradual decline, starting at 303.3 million m³ and 303.4 million m³ respectively. This initial decrease was driven by a longstanding moratorium on timber fellings that constrained supply, coupled with a structural deficit where sustainable fuelwood production from forests fell short of demand by 86 million tonnes, leading to over-extraction.

External demand shocks, including LPG supply shortages in 2019 and again in 2023 due to global conflicts, temporarily increased reliance on wood fuel for cooking, particularly in states like Chhattisgarh and Kerala. However, these surges did not reverse the production downtrend, as the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on energy markets in 2020 further underscored the market's constraints.

Structural shifts from 2022 onward played a key role. Growing demand for wooden furniture, fueled by urbanization and rising incomes, diverted wood resources away from fuel use. Simultaneously, government energy policies promoting biofuels and cleaner cooking alternatives reduced traditional dependence on wood fuel, contributing to a market size of 298.2 million m³ by 2023.
