Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the wood fuel market in El Salvador contracted in physical volume, falling from 4 131 thousand m³ to 4 041 thousand m³, while its value increased from $1 396 million to $1 463 million. This contrast between declining volume and rising value was driven by two main sets of factors.

On one hand, government measures such as subsidies for liquefied petroleum gas introduced in 2021 and the setting of maximum prices for gasoline in 2022 made fossil fuels more affordable, reducing demand for wood fuel. On the other hand, global events including the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and subsequent OPEC production cuts led to higher world energy prices, which increased the cost of wood fuel in the local market.
